Reflections on this game:
When I was first prompted with Mark Rothko’s ‘Untitled (Red)’, I didn’t know what to make of it. I’m not used to looking at traditional art, or being inspired by it. However, I was equally shocked to hear so many of my classmates’ indignant responses to Rothko’s piece. There was an overall sentiment among much of the class that such a “simple” piece of art wasn’t worthy of its own price tag, let alone being inspiration for a game. I personally have a very inclusive definition of art - if someone thinks something is art, I consider it as such as well. I don’t believe that I have to see the same value that someone else sees in a piece in order to agree that said piece has “value”. When I look at Untitled (Red), I see many things to take inspiration from, whether it be the art or the artist himself. But because of all this hubbub about the merits of the piece, I decided I wanted to honor the spirit of the painting as I see it. I wanted to make a game that was intentionally “simple”, in the same way that the piece is. And I wanted to make something that asks the viewer to find value in it, in the same way Rothko challenged my class. As a result, I decided to make something minimally interactive, and very visual. I consider it to be a visual counterpart to the concept of a ‘sound toy’. If it can inspire a little meditation on what the “value” of a game is, I’ll consider my job accomplished.
